Phoenix Lantern Parade
Gilmerton Community Centre
Winter 2017

This was our third christmas lantern project at Gilmerton Community Centre so we decided to make a large Phoenix willow sculpture to take part in the lantern parade. We worked with 2 of the youth groups and adult groups who all made a lantern each to take part in the parade as well as constructing the large phoenix sculpture which was also lit from inside for the parade.

Working with lots of different groups was a great way to make something large scale whilst also making sure everyone got something to take home at the end.

The body of the phoenix was constructed by us with the help of one of the youth clubs and one of the adult groups, it was then covered by the Gilmerton Lunch Club and decorated by the P1-4 youth group. It was a really enjoyable project and great to see everyones efforts come together to make something for everyone to enjoy.

We have made lanterns for the last few years as part of the yearly parade so have been exploring different ways to decorate them. This year, we used dried leaves which made a really nice effect when the lights inside the lanterns lit them up.
